Personal Protective Equipment – PPE
Jointing Tech supplies personal protective equipment for electrical, utility, cable-installation, maintenance and general site work. PPE is an essential part of a safe system of work, helping protect workers from identified hazards when selected, fitted, maintained and used correctly.
The right PPE depends on the task and risk assessment. Consider potential hazards such as electrical energy, arc flash, cuts, impact, chemicals, noise, dust, weather, manual handling and work at height, as well as the relevant company procedures and product standards.
PPE should be selected only after the hazards of the work have been assessed and higher-level controls considered. It is not a substitute for isolation, safe working procedures, engineering controls, training or supervision. The PPE supplied must be appropriate for the wearer, fit correctly and be compatible with other protective equipment required for the task.
When considering the need for gloves, footwear, face protection, clothing, or other equipment, confirm the specific hazards and the protection required for electrical work are in place before use. Where a specific electrical protection rating is required for PPE, do not use general workwear or gloves for arc-flash and live-working situations; specialist PPE is required and will be subject to formal assessment.
Inspect PPE before use and replace any item that is damaged, contaminated, expired or no longer provides the required protection. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage, cleaning, inspection and replacement. Ensure all site personnel understand the correct limitations and use of the equipment.
For assistance, provide the job type, hazards identified in the risk assessment, required standards, size requirements and any client or site specification.
FAQs
What is PPE?
Personal protective equipment is equipment worn to reduce exposure to hazards when other safety controls do not remove the risk completely.
Is PPE enough to make electrical work safe?
No. PPE is one part of a safe system of work. Correct isolation, procedures, competence and risk controls remain essential.
How do I choose electrical PPE?
Base the selection on the risk assessment, applicable standards, task, potential electrical hazards and your organisation’s procedures.
Should PPE be inspected before use?
Yes. Check for damage, contamination, wear, expiry information and correct fit before use.
